Representative Margo McDermed was first sworn in on January 8th 2014 in the last days of the 98th General Assembly. Raised in LaGrange, IL, Margo eventually graduated from DePaul University College of Law with highest honors. After completing law school, Margo enjoyed a career in corporate law that spanned 30 years, where she learned the value of hard work and gained the leadership skills necessary to tackle the issues in Springfield.
During her career, Margo was responsible for taking her client’s dream and making it real by writing contracts, negotiating with an opposing side, and ensuring that the law was followed to the letter. She brings this same focus and drive to the Illinois House of Representatives to tackle the challenges facing the state and the 37th District.
Margo has served on the Frankfort Township Board as Trustee and was eventually elected as Township Clerk. As Township Clerk, Representative McDermed introduced early voting in the township for all registered voters. In an effort to bring transparency to the Clerk’s office, Margo organized over 125 years of township records into a cohesive and accessible system; all at no expense to taxpayers.
In 2012 she was elected to represent the residents of Will County Board District 12, and brings her experience as a Will County Board Member, a Township Trustee and Township Clerk to her new position representing District 37 in the Illinois House of Representatives.
State Representative Margo McDermed and her husband Edward have lived in Mokena since 1978 where they raised their two children, daughter Andrea and son Steve. This year Margo and Edward were blessed with their first grandchild, Maya, from their daughter Andrea and her husband Kazuhia.
While growing up, Margo’s children attended Mokena public schools, Lincoln-Way High School and played on the Mokena Park District soccer league. Together with other concerned parents, Margo founded the Mokena Educational Foundation, serving as one of its first presidents. Margo and Edward were also very active in Boy Scouts, Lincoln-Way Marching Knights, community theatre, and the Madrigals.
Margo has been a member of Grace Church in New Lenox for over three decades where she has served on the lay governing board and led outreach work; bringing a team of volunteers to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Representative McDermed’s district includes all or parts of New Lenox, Mokena, Tinley Park, Frankfort, Homer Glen, Joliet, Lockport, and Orland Park.
